Canoe training consists of two parts.

  1. Fundamentals of Canoeing (FOC) – This is a two day class held on a weekend usually at camp Strake on the North side of Houston. This teaches the basics of canoeing on flat water and once completed you will earn the Red Cross FOC certification and the SHAC YELLOW card.

  1. Basic River Canoeing – This is a two day class held on a weekend usually in the Texas Hill country. This class is advanced training on how to read the river and plan a safe canoe trip and once completed you will earn the Red Cross Basic river certification and the SHAC BLUE card.

Rock Climbing

Real Rock  

Climbing training consists of two parts. 

  1. Tower Training – This is the basic class which includes climb on safely and moves to setting up a tower for climbing. This class is held at El Rancho Cima over a weekend.

  1. Real Rocks – This is the class that teaches you how to set multi point anchors in a real rock environment like at E-Rock. This class is held over a weekend at Enchanted Rock.

  2. Registration is through the web site only.

 ***If you are interested in attend the climbing training please let Paul Obmaces know ASAP. The climbing classes fill very quickly and they only offer them twice a year.


Scoutmaster Training

All scoutmasters need to attend training for the position of Asst. Scoutmaster which consists of two parts:

  1. Scoutmaster  & Asst Scoutmaster Specific

  2. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
